The Pittsburgh Maulers have one of the more interesting quarterback rooms in the USFL. None of last year’s quarterbacks will be returning. They look to start fresh all around with new quarterbacks and the new colors they debuted last week in which they will don the infamous Pittsburgh black and yellow.
Maulers outlook
The Maulers look to have a successful season with a touted quarterback room who are ready to lead their team to the USFL championship. A new quarterback room may be the first piece of the puzzle of success. It was and still is kind of surprising that they let Vad Lee go. Lee appeared to have good chemistry and fit into the system well.
James Morgan
First up on the quarterback list, and my projected Maulers starting quarterback is James Morgan. The 25-year-old Florida International product will look to make a statement in the USFL after being selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He would later bounce around NFL practice squads.
Morgan is someone who just couldn’t seem to stick with a team whether it be an overcrowded quarterback room or being picked up for a short period. The USFL is made for guys like him. He has great talent and just needs a stage to show it. It should be looked for if Morgan is crowned the starter, he will make a name for himself.
Chase Fourcade
Next up is Chase Fourcade, the Nicholls State record-setter for passing yards, touchdowns, completion percentage, and five other categories. He has bounced around the alternate football world spending time in the NAL with the Columbus Lions and the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders. When Fourcade’s number has been called, he has shown why he deserves to be a professional quarterback.
The reason that Fourcade is second on the depth chart is just that Morgan has had NFL time, but Fourcade can certainly battle and always be ready to jump into that QB1 slot. His arena time with Columbus is something that makes him stand out a bit. The arena game gives you less room for air and quicker time to react to the game. The Maulers can definitely utilize those traits.
Connor Sampson
Another FCS quarterback is up next in Connor Sampson who looked impressive in college at Western Illinois where he posted some impressive stats like being fourth in the nation in passing yards and seventh in the nation on pass yards per attempt. He also had a rookie minicamp workout with the Detroit Lions.
In the Maulers system, Sampson falls into the third spot. This is not because of talent but being the least experienced pro quarterback. With Sampson, there should actually be a high ceiling for him. A key trait about him is his pure arm talent. He throws a very nice ball that looks like it can sit at a high level.
